Of Beer and Books

by Renee on December 13, 2011

I’m an avid reader–always have been, as far back as I can remember. (For a while I was even in two book clubs that met monthly–that got to be a bit much.) And I’ve always enjoyed reading in a pub; I find sitting at the bar with a good book is truly a not-so-guilty pleasure.

That’s why I’m very excited to hear that one of my favorite local breweries is combining beer with books in the new year. Chardon Brew Works proprietor Donna Nedrow is launching a ladies book club to meet the third Wednesday of each month in 2012 to talk about what they’re reading and have a few beers. I love the idea!

The group will meet on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. beginning January 18, in the BrewWorks BrewHouse Upstairs banquet room, 205 Main Street, Chardon. Ladies are welcome to attend all or individual meetings—participation is not required every month—Donna says, just come when you can! The first discussion will be about American Women and the Repeal of Prohibition (American Social Experience) by Kenneth Rose. Sad to say the first meeting falls on my daughter’s 18th birthday, so I’ll miss out on that particular discussion, but I look forward to attending future get-togethers!

Chardon BrewWorks is the first brewery in Geauga County since Prohibition–and brewmaster Mike and his wife Donna Nedrow enjoy bringing good times, good food, and great beers to the historic Chardon Square. Perhaps I’ll see you there–you may find me hiding behind a good book at the bar.

I love this idea! Wish there were something like that here in northwest Arkansas!
