Cleveland Beer Week, Oskar Blues “Canniversary” & You

by Renee on October 17, 2012

Well, Good People of the North Coast, our week-long celebration of craft beer is almost upon us! Huzzah! Cleveland Beer Week is actually nine days of beery good fun, kicking off this Friday. It’s still not nearly enough time to try everything available, but I know you’ll do your best. I am going to miss the first weekend’s neighborhood pub crawls and other activities (really sad about that), but I’ll catch up to you, I promise.

The first event I’ll be attending is at the Willoughby Brewing Company at 6 p.m. on Monday the 22nd, for a keg tapping and Oskar Blues tap takeover. This kicks off the official entry of this Colorado canned craft beer into the Buckeye State. Oskar Blues celebrates their 10th “CANniversary” in November this year, and they’ve collected some nice awards and plenty of fans along the way. I had the chance to tour their brewery and hang out at the Tasty Weasel Tap Room in Longmont, CO, when I was in Boulder for the first Beer Bloggers Conference back in 2010. Thanks to tour guide Nate, I learned a lot about the history of their beers, such as Dale’s Pale Ale, Ten Fidy, Old Chub and Mama’s L’il Yella Pils– and why they believe today’s canning technology makes for superior craft beer! You may or may not agree, but there’s only one way to find out! Stop by and give it a try. And if you’re lucky enough to have a ticket to WBC Cicerone Rick Seibt’s beer sensory evaluation class there at 7 p.m. that night, perhaps I’ll see you as well. Beer education is a very good thing.

Meanwhile, I have mapped out my general attack for the rest of Cleveland Beer Week. I could list all the events I hope to get to, but really, that could change at any given moment. I will certainly be hitting up my local Heinens and Giant Eagle stores each day–they have a wide variety of beers and brewery reps who will be standing by at all hours to talk craft beer. There are great beer events going around all over town, from The Greenhouse Tavern and Noodlecat, to Deagan’s, Rozi’s,  the Tremont Tap House, Parnell’s, ABC and XYZ Taverns, Melt, Pickwick & Frolic–even the Greenville Tavern in Chagrin Falls is hosting an event! This is where you come in. You should make a list. Check it twice. Three times, even. Check out the Beer Week website, navigate the calendar day-to-day, and make a plan. And maybe we’ll run into each other. The whole week culminates in “Brewzilla, A Monster of a Beer Tasting” from 6-10 p.m. on Saturday the 27th at the Galleria, which is always a good time. We captured a nice photo of most of our Facebook Cleveland Craft Beer Community group there last year. Hope to raise a glass or two with you! Cheers to the celebration of craft beer!
