Cheers~Beer Travel is Back!

by Renee on July 14, 2021

It’s the height of summer, and with COVID vaccines now easily accessible, people are back to taking vacations– and beer travel is back! I recently made a trip to the Columbus area with my son Matt, to check out the BrewDog Brewery and Hotel, the DogHouse, about a two hour drive for us. Upon check-in, we were offered the BrewDog beer or cider of our choice. I decided to try the Aloha IPA–a crisp, fruity brew with pineapple notes. I enjoyed my beer as I checked out my accomodations, which included a fridge in the bathroom filled with a selection of shower beers, and a kegerator, should I want to enjoy any of their offerings on tap without venturing out of my room. The shower was stocked with a locally made soap and shampoo that smells like their ever popular Elvis Juice (grapefruit IPA).

I didn’t bring my dog Porter this trip, but there were plenty of dogs in attendance with their owners, enjoying the patio and dog park. The place was full that weekend, and there were lots of families enjoying a getaway. Lawn games including corn hole kept folks busy, and there was an axe throwing booth for an additional fee. Matt let me beat him in ping pong, like a good son should. Board games are stationed throughout the venue as well, if that’s more your thing. The hotel is also surrounded by trails for walking, with your canine companion or on your own.

An overnight stay includes breakfast, served with a beer-mosa of your choice. I can highly recommend the Clockwork Sunrise. Breakfast was a delicious frittata and roasted potatoes, with other offerings including yogurt, fresh fruit, bakery items, and fresh hot coffee.

One of the really cool things we enjoyed was the BrewDog Museum. It’s a self-guided space, highlighting the history of craft beer. I was pleasantly surprised to see a mention of New Albion on one of the panels! There is also a gift shop where you can buy cool BrewDog merch, including dog bandanas, t-shirts, and that wonderful Elvis Juice soap and shampoo (I came home with some).

If you happen to enjoy music festivals with your beer, BrewDog is putting on their annual General Mayhem Fest in late August. Acts this year include Dr. Dog and Superchunk. Sounds like a good time to me!

Cheers to beer travel being back! Where are you headed?
