August: What Ales Me

by Renee on August 16, 2012

August has gotten away from me–it has been a busy month for our family as my girl has been readying to head off to New Orleans for her freshman year of college at Tulane. She’s launched now, and I’m excited to watch her learn and grow and do wonderful things in the world. I really can’t wait to see her play her saxophone with the Tulane Marching Band at Green Wave football games and in the Mardi Gras parades. And what a great city for me to visit over the course of her time there! One of these visits I hope to tour the NOLA Brewing Company–I had the pleasure of meeting Head Brewer Melanie Knepp at the Pink Boots Society meeting at the Craft Brewers Conference in San Francisco a couple of years ago.

Meanwhile, my plans are pretty much set for the Great American Beer Festival in October in Denver–can’t wait for Jack’s New Albion Ale to make its debut! Also very happy that Jack’s brother Tom and sister Cathy will be able to join us. It’s going to be a real family affair for the McAuliffes! Plus, several of my local Cleveland beer friends will be making the trek out west for the festivities. It’s amazing how fast those tickets for GABF sold out so quickly! What a great fall it’s going to be!

And speaking of fall–it’s not quite upon us yet, but the pumpkin beers are here! Do you think it’s too early? I know they’re out earlier than ever thanks to the early push of Christmas ales into the market in autumn–but honestly, I don’t mind. I’ve already had my favorite, Southern Tier’s Pumking–but I’m looking forward to making my way through many more. Look for some local pumpkin ale tastings in your neck of the woods to help pick your favorite! Rozi’s Wine House here in NE Ohio has a local pumpkin beer tasting I’m going to try to get to come September. But I’ll miss picking pumpkins with my girl this year–I’ll be crying tears in my pumpkin beer to get over it.

First, I’m going to enjoy the end of this summer–hope you will as well! Cheers

Pumpkin beer has been on store shelves for about a week now. I knew this was coming when I saw the stuff being brewed at a local brewery in July, but it’s more real walking into your local and seeing cases and cases of pumpkin for sale. It’s the middle of August, and it’s pumpkin beer season.
